Floridians Protecting Freedom reacts to passage of Ohio’s Issue 1
Win at ballot box in Ohio bodes well for Florida’s initiative
SARASOTA – Tonight, voters in Ohio approved Issue 1, guaranteeing access to abortion and other reproductive health care for Ohioans. Lauren Brenzel, Campaign Director for Floridians Protecting Freedom, the committee working to put abortion access on Florida’s ballot in 2024, released the following statement:
“Ohioans just demonstrated that they don’t support politicians interfering in their private medical decisions and Floridians are even more bold in their opposition to government interference in our private lives. This win in Ohio continues a perfect score for states affirming support for abortion access in the wake of the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.
“Historically ballot initiatives with strong majority support in Florida, like the Floridians Protecting Freedom amendment, significantly outperform partisan candidates. In 2016, for example, a medical marijuana initiative got 71%; another in 2020, on minimum wage, got over 61%.
“The ballot language in Ohio was rewritten by anti-abortion politicians in the state in an effort to confuse Ohio voters but they saw right through it. Here in Florida, politicians do not have the same opportunity to alter ballot language and intentionally confuse voters.
“The win in Ohio gives us further insight into how we can win in Florida, including early organizing and fundraising. The Ohio ballot initiative began its organizing efforts in March of this year, nearly a year later than Floridians Protecting Freedom began organizing.
“Our campaign has the time, resources, and momentum to win. Tonight’s victory in Ohio only strengthens our resolve to return the freedom to make decisions about abortion to the people of Florida, where it belongs.”
