Floridians Protecting Freedom statement on anniversary of Roe v. Wade
Loss of federal protections under Roe highlights urgent need to end government interference in personal health care decisions
SARASOTA – Today marks 51 years since the landmark Roe v. Wade US Supreme Court decision. Lauren Brenzel, Campaign Director for Floridians Protecting Freedom, the committee working to put abortion access on Florida’s ballot in 2024, released the following statement:
“On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, our freedoms in Florida are under attack. We are living under a 15-week abortion ban as well as the looming threat of a six-week, or near total ban, pending a ruling by our state Supreme Court.
“While we work to protect and restore access to abortion in Florida, attacks on sexual and reproductive health continue across the country. Florida is one of 21 states to ban some or all abortions post-Roe, and the legislative attacks on our freedoms are continuing with another anti-abortion bill having passed a state House committee this week.
“Floridians should have the freedom to make their own personal health care decisions without interference from politicians. The Dobbs decision that overturned Roe sent these decisions back to the states to decide. And that’s just what our amendment does. The amendment to limit government interference with abortion will put these decisions back where they belong, in the hands of Florida families and their doctors, not extreme politicians. As we look back on Roe v. Wade, the need to restore these freedoms has never been greater.”
